Jamison High School Tasmania Trip Day One

28th September 2007

-17 °C

Planes, trains and automobiles. An exceptionally early start for all. Most students caught the 6.07am train from Penrith to Central and then to the Domestic Airport for the flight to Hobart. Others arrived at the airport with parents. We flew from Sydney to Hobart with Virgin. Well done to all our first time flyers.

Arrival in Hobart
The weather in Hobart did not dissappoint to provide the proper welcome with strong gusts of cold wind and driving rain. We were soaked on the tarmac from the plane to the terminal.

After collecting bags and meeting our bus driver, Bernerd and caterers, Lynn and Alan ("Bub") it was time to pack the bus. There was panic when all the bags didn't fit, but we managed.

Cadbury Factory Visit
The highlight of the day was the visit to the Cadbury factory in Claremont. It was first built on this site in 1921, an "old building full of new equipment". As we were visiting a fully functioning food factory (told you that chocolate is a food) we were required to comply with many food safety and occupational health and safety requirements.

We all looked very attractive in our hairnets!

During the tour our guides explained the cultivation of cocoa beans, the processing of chocolate, and the packing of chocolate products. It takes one pod of beans (approximately 50) to make a Freddo Frog!

After the tour we hit the Cadbury Shop ... much chocolate is in the post!!!

Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery
After lunch we visited the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery. Many students thought that it would be boring but were pleasantly surprised.

It was a wet and windy evening, but we all had a relaxing time playing games.

Everybody was tucked in and asleep by 10:30pm. (Wonderful!!!!!!)

Hullo all. So glad that all has started so well for everyone. The chocolate factory visit was obviously as good as expected. Glad you enjoyed yourselves. Was the Antarctic exhibition extended? Keep on enjoying!
